Child Sponsorship Frequently Asked Questions
What is your commitment? How long are you expected to sponsor a child?
The commitment is to pay $30per month or $360 for a year. You can pay for as long as you are able to. When a sponsor is not able to continue to pay, Jou Nouvo continues to pay the fee for the child to stay in school through our general funds.
Is the listing on the website up to date?
We do our best to keep the listing up to date. After you visit our child sponsorships page, if you see a child or children you would like to sponsor, please complete the online application and contact us. The child sponsorship coordinator will get back to you to confirm and respond to any questions you may have.
How do you correspond with your sponsored child and his/her family? How often is it expected to correspond?
You can correspond with your sponsored child and his/her family by sending letter every time Kerline travels to Haiti during the month of September, March, and December. We also do our best to set up regular communications between the children and their sponsors. We try to figure out new ways to help the children with writing letters; we take new photos at our Christmas party every December, then, share each child’s letter and photo with their sponsor. We hope to be able to produce short videos as well to share with sponsors. During the holidays, sponsors have the option—if they so choose-- to send a letter, a card, a video, and a monetary gift up $25(in CASH) to the sponsored child. This letter or card and monetary gift (if any) are delivered directly to the child and family during our Christmas party. The sponsorship coordinator will send a notice in writing to all sponsors about this additional opportunity for correspondence with their sponsored child.
Can you correspond directly with your child?
No. All correspondence is to be coordinated through Jou Nouvo. This helps Jou Nouvo as an organization to keeps all activities in order; it helps us protect the privacy of each sponsored child and their family as well as the privacy of each sponsor. It also true that there isn't a regular mailing system anymore where a sponsor can send letters directly to Haiti.
Can you send a check to your sponsored child in Haiti?
No. The family of your sponsored child will not be able to cash a check.
Do you have apprehensions on trying to relate to a child that you don’t know?
If you have apprehension on trying to relate to a child that you don’t know, please contact Kerline or the sponsorship coordinator to voice these concern(s), and together, we can figure out the best way how you can connect and relate to your sponsored child and her/his family.
